My dreams are skies and mountains, a reminder of Bogota and my parents. A land where indigenous people worked with gold inspiring El Dorado legend. My grandmother on my father’s side was of Muisca origin, people whose leader would get covered in gold dust and ornaments to dive into the water, letting all the riches go to the bottom, to the earth, and stay on the mountains.

I was born and raised in Bogotá, like my mom, and her family. This landscape is my mother and my father. Bogota is like a body where the depth of the ultramarine blue and the metal meet.

Trace the outline of the Andean mountains made with gold leaf and acrylic on linen. I use the acrylic painting in thin layers with the canvas laying down on the floor, because for me it is a comfortable way of working. The linen is sealed with gesso, which is a kind of glue, to protect the fabric from the painting and the elements. It is sand and then I add the gold leaf and the paint.
