I make these with oil, gold and linen. The oil painting is used in thin layers with the canvas laying down on the floor, because for me it is a comfortable way of working. The linen is sealed with gesso, which is a kind of glue, to protect the wood from the painting and the elements. It is sand and then I add the gold leaf and the paint.
The subject is Bogota. I’m emphasising El Dorado. The painting was going to be more complex. I liked the minimalistic look. The MDF allowed me to get flat finishes. I was looking for this finish. I love Bogotá because I’m from here. And my mom, and her family is from here. El dorado was the land of the Muiscas, the indigenous people who lived here before the Spaniards. My grandmother on my father’s side was from this group. Thus landscape is my mother and my father. Ultramarine blue and metals have been a constant in my works. Bogotá is seen as a body. The body of the mother.
